Although this is a work of fiction, it once again visits the premise of animals having souls, in this case: a dog who is reincarnated many times. Through it all, it tries to ferret out its life purpose (hence, the book's title). You could look at this as many short stories that are spread out over its many lives, or as a long telling of one animal's soul story over many lifetimes. In any case, it's a heartwarming tale of companionship and loyalty, as well, as the sadder end-of-life moments that accompany having a pet -- both from the point of view of the human and of the dog. The sequel to this is: 'A Dog's Journey'.
